On November 9, 2020, the China-International Seabed Authority Joint Training and Research Center (JTRC) was launched by a virtual ceremony hosted by Mr. Michael W. Lodge, Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, and Mr. Wang Hong, Vice Minister of Natural Resources of China. After the launch of JTRC, the JTRC Steering Committee held its first meeting to discuss future plans and initiatives for the Center to benefit developing countries. (https://bit.ly/2Uaggkz)
The International Seabed Authority and the State Oceanic Administration of China (SOA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Friday, October 18, 2019, to establish the first-ever joint training and research center in Qingdao, China.
The China-International Seabed Authority Joint Training and Research Center (JTRC) will provide the International Seabed Authority with a new platform to promote capacity building and transfer of Marine technology in developing countries, and to promote and share human knowledge of the deep sea and its environment.
The JTRC will provide training programmes in Marine science and technology and in Marine science research and technology aimed at promoting the full participation of developing countries in activities in the international deep seabed area.
The JTRC will support cooperative research programmes related to the latest developments in deep seabed activities, as well as organizing conferences and workshops and disseminating the results of Marine scientific research in easily accessible publications.
