China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) in accordance with its contract for exploration of polymetallic nodules signed with ISA on 12 May 2017 is offering four (4) engineering training opportunities to candidates from developing States as part of its 2021 training programme. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic and related constraints, the training will be conducted completely online from September to December 2021.

A total of 48-60 classes of video courses will be prepared for trainees (about 4-5 classes per week, 45 minutes per class). The training topics include all links of the whole chain of marine mining, such as basic oceanography, international marine policy and law, polymetallic nodule resources characteristics, exploration technology, mining technology, beneficiation and metallurgy technology, economic evaluation, marine environment and ecology, deep-sea equipment and operation practice, etc.

All training videos and course material will be accessible through a designated website for which further information will be communicated in due course. Real-time online seminars will be organized between trainer and trainees to carry out real-time interactive communication and Q & A. Trainees will also have the opportunity to interact with trainers through text messaging or email and receive evaluations and feedback on research reports.

As a part of the training assessment, the trainers of the various majors will arrange 2-3 open research topics for the trainees to choose and answer in combination with the training content and the current situation in their home country and abroad. According to their own professional background and research interests, the trainees choose two topics of different majors, and submit a research report of no less than 8000 words about one month after the completion of the training. The trainees' reports and the scores of the trainers shall be submitted to the ISA as the results of training and assessment.
